[edit] Description

The 252 foot long steamer Conestoga was built in Cleveland and launched on July 6, 1878 and sank on May 22, 1922 outside Lock 28 of the Old Galop Canal. due to a fire in the engine room. The ship was flushed from the Lock and sunk in her current position.

This is such a shallow dive that the ship's chimney is visible above water, just 75' from shore. Points of interest include the massive propellor and the boiler.

[edit] Access

This is a shore dive. Park along the peninsula, gear up and enter slightly upstream from the chimney. You will run into the ship at a depth of 20'.

[edit] Hazards

This is a fairly tame site though the current is swift on the south side of the wreck.

Be aware as ascending up the back of the boat as you get quite shallow and excess bouyancy can pop you to the surface as it in only about 10 feet at the top of the wreck.
