[edit] Access
Shore dive with easy access
Generally a very easy site to dive and popular with local divers.
There are two entrances to dive this spot:
- The first entrance is directly below the falls, closest to the parking lot. Here the bottom consists of rock and sunken timbers left over from the logging era. There is a cable that goes from the shore line at the parking lot to the island across the lake, and makes an excellent reference. Use the cable to go out and come back. Fish life, sunfish, bass, pickerel to muskie inhabit the area in abundance.
- The second entrance is off to the right of the parking lot when looking out at the lake, down a path. At this entrance, you need to swim a short distance to get beyond the rock shoal to get depth, which drops to about 40ft. Staying along the shoal / rock face will generally keep you out of the boating channel. Going off the wall, into the lake, the bottom is pretty much silt / mud stirred up easily, nothing to really see unless you stay on the wall.
Two Restraunts are a stone throw away. There are no washroom facilities on site. Garbage cans are maintained by the Ministry of Natural Resources .
This site is protected under the Heritage Act (Parks Canada). There have been some significant aboriginal artifacts found here.
There is a full Service dive shop in the City of Peterborough.
[edit] Hazards
BOATS!! BOATS!! BOATS!! You are on the edge of the Trent Severn Water way, traffic can be very heavy on weekends, particularly if the weather is good or it is the long weekend holiday period.
This is a very popular spot for fishing from both boat and shore. If you dive here you will understand why. Don't get caught or tangled in line.
Current can change in minutes. The dam up stream has been known to open without prior warning making exit / return to shore difficult. Be aware of sudden changes in current, and plan for this before entering the water. The current can take you into the lake and into the middle Trent Severn water way navigational channal, into heavy boat traffic.
This area is covered by 911. There is a "green" number at the parking lot.
